The Plastic Injection Molding Process
Injection molding is a manufacturing process that produces components by injecting molten material into a mold. Injection molding can be performed with a wide range of plastic materials, including ABS, Nylon, HDPE, PC, PVC, TPU, and most commonly thermoplastic pellets. The molding process consists of the following basic steps:
Clamping
The first step in the injection molding process is clamping. The clamping unit is the part that holds the mold together before injection occurs. The two sides of the mold are put into the unit, and the machine pushes the two halves together.
Injection
The plastic is injected into the machine, which uses heat to melt it into a liquid. The liquid is then injected into the mold, keeping it warm throughout the process.
Dwelling
In the dwelling phase, the melted plastic fills the entire length of the mold. Pressure is applied directly to the mold to ensure that the liquid fills each cavity and that the product comes out the same as the mold.
Cooling
The cooling stage is the most immediate step. The molds are placed separately so that the plastic inside can cool and begin to form a solid inside the mold.
Mold Opening
Once the parts have cooled, a clamping motor will slowly open the two parts of the mold, allowing for a safe and simple removal of the final product.
Ejection
When the mold is opened, an ejector rod slowly pushes the solidified product out of the open mold cavity.
